Eventfinder Sells Out Whitianga Scallop Festival

Eventfinder’s Ticketing Services sold out the legendary Whitianga Scallop Festival 24 hours prior to the festival opening this year.

The Scallop Festival, an iconic Kiwi event, was held on 17 September at the Whitianga Marina Reserve, inside a purpose-built village of marquees overlooking the picturesque Whitianga Harbour.

Eventfinder’s marketing and sales team worked closely with the Tourism Coromandel staff for six months prior to the festival to maximise every opportunity to reach as many ticket buyers as possible.

“There is no doubt that the marketing and promotional assistance done by Eventfinder’s team was key in the event selling out 24 hours prior to the festival commencing” said Megan Etherington, Tourism Coromandel’s Events Director.

The festival was featured in Eventfinder’s Weekly Newsletter (circ: 120,000) and was featured across Eventfinder’s network of syndicated media sites, including NZ Herald, Yahoo, MSN and Stuff, the event channels of which are managed by Eventfinder.

Eventfinder members were given an opportunity to purchase tickets during a five-day pre-sale window, prior to the general release of tickets to the public on June 1. More than 25% of the festival’s 4500 tickets were sold during the pre-sale period.

“The ticketing process was simple for the public but at the same time was comprehensive and informative in the back end for management purposes,” said Ms Etherington, commenting on Eventfinder’s industry facing application, Eventfinder Pro.

Eventfinder Pro enables promoters to sell tickets online, providing completely transparent financial reporting, and removing the industry practice of charging exorbitant transaction fees, delivery or convenience charges to end consumers.

“The Tourism Coromandel team was well organised, professional and worked with us months in advance to create a huge success” said Bob Carlton, Eventfinder’s Commercial Director. “On the day, it was seamless and everybody had a great experience”.

Scanning Tickets Without an Internet Connection

Whether it’s a festival in a paddock or gig at a pub, sometimes the Internet just isn’t there. Eventfinder Pro now lets you scan tickets without an Internet connection.

When you log into Eventfinder Pro, any upcoming events for which online tickets are no longer available are displayed on the dashboard as ready to scan.

Eventfinder Pro Dashboard showing Offline Mode indicator for ticket validation

In the background, Eventfinder Pro tells your browser to download and store all the information needed for scanning tickets without an Internet connection.  You’ll notice the status indicator on the dashboard will turn green and say “Offline Mode Ready” when the information is safely stored – it only takes a few seconds.  Once the indicator is green you can safely turn your computer off, the information will still be there when you restart it later without an Internet connection.  When you’re ready to start scanning, just turn your computer back on and open Eventfinder Pro in your web browser by typing its address (or using a bookmark).  The dashboard will display in Offline mode ready for you to start scanning tickets.

Offline mode only allows access to the dashboard and ticket validation pages of your events for which online tickets are no longer available. Other pages, such as sales information, will simply display a message letting you know you’re in Offline mode and links to your events that are ready for scanning.

It couldn’t be any simpler.

  1. Log into Eventfinder Pro
  2. Wait for the Offline Mode indicator to turn green
  3. Take computer to event entrance
  4. Turn computer on and open Eventfinder Pro
  5. Plug in the USB barcode scanner
  6. Start scanning

The next time you are connected to the Internet and logged into Eventfinder Pro the scanned ticket data will be uploaded for safe-keeping and reporting.

Offline mode is currently only available in modern browsers such as Apple’s Safari or Google’s Chrome — both are free to download if you’re not already using them.  We recommend Apple’s Safari browser for ticket scanning as it’s currently the fastest for that task. Unfortunately, Firefox and Internet Explorer do not currently support the standards required for Offline ticket scanning.  Essentially — if the dashboard indicator is green then your browser is suitable.

Scanning tickets in Eventfinder Pro is best performed using a USB barcode scanner, which you simply plug into your computer’s USB port.  We can loan you a scanner if required or you can purchase your own.

To delete the information downloaded for Offline ticket scanning you only need to log out of Eventfinder Pro.  To restore the information simply log back in.

New Features Released For Eventfinder Pro 2.0

Media Alert
Auckland, New Zealand. October 5 2011.

Eventfinder has released a major upgrade to its award winning event marketing and ticketing platform. The Eventfinder Pro 2.0 upgrade includes a completely new Ajax user interface.

Eventfinder Pro 2.0 is the industry facing application that enables event promoters and organizers to list their event and have it distributed for free. They can set-up and manage their own online ticket sales direct to consumers for simple single-day, single-price events through to complex, multi-day festivals with tiered pricing.

Eventfinder Pro won Best User Experience at the 2011 New Zealand Internet Awards.

“Ticketing systems don’t usually win user experience awards because they are notoriously difficult to understand and hard to use” says Michael Turner, Eventfinder’s chief executive.

“We’re proud to be recognized by our peers for helping transform an industry worth billions of dollars by making online ticketing accessible with world-class interface design. We get rave reviews from our clients for making ticketing easy and giving them the features they’ve been screaming for.”

The re-designed interface includes an HTML5 offline validation feature, which enables event owners to electronically validate tickets at the door using a laptop and an over-the-counter USB barcode scanner, even without an Internet connection present.

Promoters now have the ability to market discounts and special offers to consumers who have purchased tickets to previous shows and events.

Eventfinder Pro enables promoters, venues and artists to sell tickets online without giving up control over customer relationships, providing completely transparent financial reporting, and removing the industry practice of charging exorbitant transaction fees, delivery or convenience charges to end consumers.

It is available to all event promoters, venues, festivals, bands and arts organizations within Eventfinder Australia and Eventfinder New Zealand. The company is expected to launch in the United States early in 2012.

Eventfinder Launches in Australia

Media Alert
Sydney, Australia. September 13, 2011

Eventfinder has launched its award winning technology platform in Australia. The VC-backed company is transforming the events and live entertainment industry with its innovative approach to event marketing and ticketing.

Eventfinder is pleased to announce its expansion into the Australian market with the launch of Eventfinder Australia. Eventfinder is the world’s only integrated event marketing, syndication and ticketing platform, providing event promoters, organisers, venues and artists the ability to list and manage their own event information, distribution and ticketing services.

“The site has far exceeded initial expectations. After only two weeks we’ve listed over 4,000 events nationally across Australia” says Eventfinder’s chief executive, Michael Turner.

“The site is already attracting over 2,000 visitors a day and growing fast. That’s extraordinary considering we haven’t done any marketing yet”.

While many applications service a small part of this market, Eventfinder enables the events and live entertainment industry to list and manage their own event information for free, while the company generates revenue from premium placement, newsletter marketing, ticketing services and overseas licensing.

Eventfinder is a nationwide service, including regional Australia as well as the major metropolitan areas (BrisbaneGold CoastNewcastleSydneyCanberraMelbourneAdelaide and Perth), and covers the full spectrum of events, from major concerts, sports, festivals and theatre to underground gigs.

The platform enables promoters, venues and artists to sell tickets online without giving up control over customer relationships, providing completely transparent financial reporting, and removing the industry practice of charging exorbitant transaction fees, delivery or convenience charges to end consumers.

The company has recently completed a funding round with the specific objective of gaining traction in the Australian market, before launching in the United States and South-East Asia.

Making full use of constructive criticism

I began my first full-time job as a designer back in 2004 for a real estate company in Rotorua. The fast pace of the real estate industry meant I had to learn to code and design in a quick and efficient manner, but unfortunately since I was the sole designer (in fact I was the sole “IT guy”), I had nobody else to learn from, bounce ideas with or even discuss the latest happenings in print or web media.

Over the next 5 years at that job, I worked on a number of projects and received a lot of feedback and criticism. Unfortunately not all of it was constructive and the opportunity to improve and upskill was virtually non-existent.

Fast-forward to today, and I am working alongside some of the best people in their fields here at Eventfinder. By surrounding myself with others who are more experienced than I am, together we can critique, refine and improve whatever project we are working on. My co-workers have been in the game for a lot longer than me, and they have seen trends come and go, but ultimately standards never go out of style.

As a web designer, it’s hard to break out of my usual habits when designing a particular product or coding in a particular manner. To receive constructive feedback from my co-workers is extremely important so that we can release products that are modern, user-friendly and efficient at what they do.

I firmly believe that receiving detailed responses for any piece of work I produce is an opportunity not to be missed. Constructive feedback from others (no matter what their computer skills are like) can show another perspective that I might not have thought of. I often design and code with my blinkers on. It has challenged me to take that project to the next level; it can point out areas where I have made mistakes, it has motivated me to learn new skills; and perhaps most importantly it has improved my communication skills. And of course, a slice of humble pie always helps too. All of these things are essential for anyone to be successful in their respective field, particularly web designers.

Eventfinder will soon be releasing another major new product, and throughout the entire process (between 3 to 6 months) I have attended numerous design review sessions and development meetings about this particular product’s progress and direction. This presented a huge opportunity to not only take on the biggest project I’ve ever been given, but also a fantastic chance to receive feedback on my design and coding style, and improve upon it as much as possible. We continually worked in a positive feedback loop throughout the project build to give the best results.

Luckily here at Eventfinder my co-workers are extremely talented and professional at what they do, and since they’re so closely involved with the company’s direction, they immediately understood the goals I was trying to achieve with this particular product. They were able to provide the right kind of unbiased and actionable feedback I was specifically after. There were numerous open-ended questions and a large amount of valuable and detailed comments that were articulate and defined.

With the right attitude I put aside my emotions and pride for the moment, realised my shortcomings and used their valuable feedback as motivation to improve the product, learned a few new skills, and pushed myself to levels I’ve never reached before.

Thankfully my co-workers were extremely honest, and while there were a few surprises, on the whole their responses were positive and supportive with no malice or ignorance whatsoever. Everybody gave their educated and detailed opinions so in the end, we could collectively fulfill our goal of building the best product possible.

In the past I improved my designs solely based on inspiration from other designers because I was working on my own, but here at Eventfinder, I am constantly finding inspiration from my co-workers’ constructive criticism and valuable feedback. Thanks team!
